St Maarten and Anguilla collaborate to enhance cricket development

Anguilla Cricket Association and St Maarten Cricket Association have joined forces to enhance opportunities for cricket players across both islands.

During a meeting on 21 June, representatives from both associations discussed several key recommendations to provide players with more avenues for competitive cricket.

These discussions highlighted the current state of cricket in Anguilla and St Maarten, specifically the challenges associated with limited facilities and resources.

Despite these obstacles, both associations are committed to finding creative solutions and leveraging their collective strengths, a press release from Anguilla Cricket Association said on 24 June.

A major outcome of the meeting was the proposal to establish a schedule of friendly matches between Anguilla and St Maarten over the next three months.

The aim is to not only provide valuable match experience but also serve as preparation for the upcoming 50-over and three-day Leeward Islands tournaments.

In a joint statement, presidents of both groups said: “We believe that these friendly matches will significantly enhance our players’ skills and readiness for competitive play.

“By engaging in regular matches, we can improve not only our team’s cohesion but also the overall standard of cricket in both territories.”

In addition to arranging friendly fixtures, the associations explored the possibility of Anguilla’s teams participating in St Maarten’s domestic tournaments.

They also discussed the establishment of a U19 programme that would include both Anguilla’s and St Maarten’s youth talent, facilitating bilateral matches between the national teams.

This initiative aims to nurture young prospects and cultivate the next generation of cricketers in both islands, the press release said.

The details of the discussions and future plans will be communicated to players’ representatives and the cricket committee.

Anguilla Cricket Association president Timothy Hodge said: “The collaboration between St Maarten and Anguilla illustrates our commitment to the growth and development of cricket in the Caribbean.

“Together, we can overcome our challenges and create a thriving cricket community that benefits our players.”
