Anguilla’s Khamal Harding-Hodge has been officially appointed to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)’s prestigious 2025 international referee list.
This marks a historic moment for the Anguilla Football Association (AFA) and signals the return of the island to the global football stage after 17 years without a FIFA-listed referee.
“Harding-Hodge’s appointment as a FIFA International Referee is a testament to his unwavering commitment, hard work and dedication to the sport,” an AFA press release said on 18 January.
“His recognition is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for the Anguilla Football Association, as it signifies the successful revitalisation of the country’s refereeing programme.”
Strict criteria
To be selected for the FIFA International Refereeing List, referees undergo a highly demanding process.
Harding-Hodge’s journey included passing a series of stringent fitness tests, which are among the toughest in the world of football officiating.
These tests involve 40-metre sprints, interval sprints with 75-metre runs and recovery walks that challenge referees to maintain peak physical condition.
In addition to fitness, candidates must demonstrate exceptional skill, judgment and consistency in their officiating, as well as a strong understanding of the rules and regulations of the game.
“Harding-Hodge’s dedication to these requirements, along with his ability to perform under pressure and in high-stakes environments, were key factors in his selection,” the AFA said.
The process also includes selection by the AFA’s Referee Committee, which nominates top-performing officials to FIFA based on their overall performance and potential for success at the international level.
A stride forward
“Harding-Hodge’s inclusion on this prestigious list marks not just his personal achievement but also the
continued growth and development of Anguilla’s refereeing community,” the press release said.
The achievement is the fruition of a vision set forth by AFA president Girdon Connor, who has been dedicated to rebuilding and strengthening Anguilla’s football infrastructure.
Under his leadership, the appointment of referee director Malcolm Ramsey was made to provide the
necessary support and guidance to officials like Harding-Hodge.
“Harding-Hodge’s appointment to the FIFA International Refereeing List opens up exciting opportunities to officiate international matches, bringing Anguilla’s talent to the world’s footballing elite,” the AFA said.
“This achievement represents both individual success and a collective stride forward for the Anguillian football community.”
