Kurt De Freitas appointed as Anguilla’s temporary attorney general

Kurt De Freitas has been appointed as attorney general of Anguilla for six months while the recruitment of a permanent attorney general is underway.

He will be responsible for overseeing judicial affairs, providing legal advice to the government, and representing the government in court.

De Freitas OBE, KC, has had a long career in the region, including as attorney general of Anguilla from 1990 to 1997 and of the Turks and Caicos Islands from 2005 to 2010.

He served as attorney general of the South Atlantic Ocean territories of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha from 1997 to 2004.

And he has been deputy attorney general in Monserrat and solicitor general in the Cayman Islands.

In a Facebook statement on 15 October, Governor Julia Crouch said she was grateful to De Freitas for taking up the temporary appointment and is looking forward to working with him.

“I’m confident he will be a strong addition to the hard working team at Attorney General’s Chambers and provide leadership to keep the work of government on track,” she said.

“I’d like to thank all members of chambers for their continued dedication to delivering for the people of Anguilla at this busy time. ”

De Freitas read law at the University of the West Indies.

During his career, as well as working as attorney general, he has also acted as governor in the territories of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

In the Cayman Islands, De Freitas headed the territory’s legal department, supervising the day-to-day management including the supervision of criminal prosecutions.

He has appeared in higher courts on constitutional law cases and has experience in drafting, including as a legal and legislative drafting consultant to the Caricom Secretariat in Guyana.
