Police have received “alarming” reports of motorists engaging in dangerous racing along the Jeremiah Gumbs Highway in Anguilla.
The Royal Anguilla Police Force has warned the motoring public not to engage in the “reckless” behaviour which endangers those involved and “puts innocent lives at risk”.
“Recently, an innocent person was injured and their vehicle damaged when they had to avoid the road racers,” the force wrote in a Facebook post on 7 October.
The incident took place at about 7pm on 27 September on Jeremiah Gumbs Highway, a police spokesperson told Anguilla Focus.
The driver attempted to avoid collision with two vehicles that were racing and occupying the both lanes.
This caused damage to their vehicle and minor injuries and they visited the hospital to be examined.
“The two vehicles that were racing did not stop and by the time the driver contacted the police and the officers responded, they could not be located,” the spokesperson said.
In the Facebook post police continued: “We want to make it clear – anyone caught participating in road racing will face legal action.
“It is vital that we all prioritise safety on our roads. If you see or have any information on individuals engaging in this dangerous activity, please contact us immediately.”
This past weekend, officers from the Tactical Unit carried out several traffic stops and vehicle checkpoints.
“These actions are vital to maintaining law and order, ensuring our roads remain safe for all,” police said in a Facebook post.
“We appreciate the public’s cooperation during these operations, as it plays an essential role in supporting our officers’ efforts to keep Anguilla secure.”
