Steel frame arrives for Island Harbour basketball court building

The steel frame for the building that will cover and eventually enclose the Island Harbour basketball court has arrived.

Installation is set to begin early next month, along with the construction of columns for the raised resurfaced court, a government Facebook post said on 12 September.

The drawings for the redevelopment of the space are also being finalised and will be shared with stakeholders for final consideration.

Speaking in a Facebook video, Premier Ellis Webster explained that the steel building will protect both the court and the players from the natural elements.

“I think that will allow more persons to come and play, and while they’re playing we can also do tournaments here,” he said.

The premier explained that said the plan is to eventually create a fully enclosed building with bathrooms, locker rooms and seating.

It is all part of a bigger plan to enhance the whole of Island Harbour including creating an arts and craft centre, a community centre and a boardwalk, he said.

“We feel that Island Harbour [is] the birth place of the revolution, the birthplace of modern Anguilla, and I want to make sure that we do something that leaves a lasting legacy for the people.”
