Anguilla firefighters rescue dog stranded on steep embankment

A tense rescue unfolded just days before Christmas, when a dog became trapped on a steep embankment in South Hill and could not climb back to safety.

Local residents who heard the stranded animal barking alerted the Anguilla Fire and Rescue Service, prompting the Urban Search and Rescue Division to respond.

A team of firefighters carefully descended the embankment using ropes and harnesses to reach the frightened dog and bring it safely back to solid ground.

The rescue on 21 December highlighted the wide-ranging responsibilities of Anguilla’s firefighters, whose work extends beyond fires and vehicle collisions.

Supporting the efforts were Kristin Bourne who located the dog, along with Claire Lynch, Romaro Richardson, Davon Carty and Rob Willsher who helped with communications.

AARF and Anguilla National Trust aided with the rescue, Shelli Goldberg Albert paid for vet care from her Mango Fund, and Brett Federoff of Elvis’ Beach Bar helped to care for the dog temporarily.

Following the rescue, the team named the dog Paulo.
