Tri-tania Lowe breaks 26-year-old national 100m record

Athlete Tri-tania Lowe has broken Anguilla’s 26-year-old record for the women’s 100 metre sprint.

The North Hill resident clocked 11.97 seconds at the 2024 Nevis Culturama Games at the Nevis Athletic Stadium on 21 July.

Running against a headwind of 0.08 metres per seconds, she beat the previous record holder Desiree Cocks, who has held the title since 1998 with an 11.98 second run.

Lowe told Anguilla Focus that before the run she had been confident not only about winning but also about breaking the national record.

“I had done it the year before, but it was not registered as it was wind-aided, meaning that the wind registered assisted me,” she said.

The 23-year-old, who has been involved in sports for 15 years, said she trained for the tournament by running 150, 60, 30 and 20 meters.

“My training also included a lot of block starts to gain momentum for the start of the race. I’m also a long jumper so training also included preparations for long jump,” she explained.

Lowe said breaking the record that has been held for 26 years shows how much she has grown as an athlete.

“Being the Anguilla 100-metre record holder means a lot to me because it reflects my preparation, dedication, and hard work,” she said.

The athlete is heading to GC Foster College in Spanish Town, Jamaica, later this year to further both her academic and athletic career.
