Health ministry to host free education session on dementia this Friday

The Ministry of Health is hosting a free educational session on dementia for care workers and community caregivers this Friday, 10 October.

The interactive educational session is being held in recognition of Care of the Elderly Month which is celebrated in Anguilla every October, a press release said.

It is designed to equip care workers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for people living with dementia, while promoting dignity, respect and quality of life.

Dementia is a progressive brain condition that affects memory, thinking and behaviour, making daily life increasingly challenging for those affected.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 55 million people currently live with dementia worldwide and this is projected to reach 78 million by 2030.

In Anguilla and across the Caribbean region, many caregivers – both professional and informal – are already supporting older adults with dementia, often without training.

This session will provide valuable, evidence-based guidance for dementia care in both home and
institutional settings, the press release said.

Topics to be covered include:

  • What dementia is, how it progresses, and how it affects the brain and behavior
  • Real-life testimony from individuals or families impacted by dementia
  • Effective and compassionate care strategies, including communication, behavior management, and creating supportive environments
  • The emotional and psychological aspects of dementia care
  • Practical tools to help preserve dignity and improve quality of life

The session will take place from 5pm to 7pm at Room 3 in the Anguilla Community College’s Albert Lake Building in The Valley.

Anyone interested in attending should register early as space is limited.

Registration can be completed by contacting in-service education coordinator Amanda Charles at (264) 729-9024 or [email protected]
